word-association test

a test in which the participant responds to a stimulus word with the first word that comes to mind. The technique was invented by Francis Galton in 1879 for use in exploring individual differences, and Emil Kraepelin was the first to apply it to the study of abnormality. Carl Jung and other psychoanalysts later adapted it for use as a projective technique.
