voltage-gated ion channel

voltage-gated ion channel

an ion channel that opens or closes in response to the voltage difference across the membrane, such as the voltage-gated sodium (Na+) channel that mediates the action potential. Also called voltage-activated gate. Compare ligand-gated ion channel.
