vocational rehabilitation

a program designed to develop or restore productivity in individuals with mental or physical disabilities or those who have been injured or ill. A vocational rehabilitation program includes assessment, vocational guidance, and training; it involves helping the individual to develop skills that have been lost or neglected and to find or return to employment in the competitive job market or another setting (see sheltered workshop; transitional employment). Also called occupational rehabilitation. See also work rehabilitation center.
