visual cortex

the cerebral cortex of the occipital lobe, specifically the striate cortex (primary visual cortex). In humans this occupies a small region on the lateral surface of the occipital pole of the brain, but most is buried in the banks of the calcarine fissure on the medial surface of the brain. The visual cortex receives input directly from the lateral geniculate nucleus via the optic tract and sends output to the multiple visual areas that make up the visual association cortex.
