venlafaxine

n. an antidepressant that works by inhibiting the reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine; it belongs to a class called the SNRIs (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors). Its mechanism of action therefore differs from that of the SSRIs, which some believe makes it a more effective treatment for depression. It is also appropriate for treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder. Like other antidepressants, it should not be administered concurrently with monoamine oxidase inhibitors. U.S. trade name: Effexor.
