unconscious process

1. in psychoanalytic theory, a psychical process that takes place in the unconscious; for example, repression.

2. in cognitive psychology, a mental process that occurs without a person being explicitly aware of it and largely outside of conscious control. Also called subliminal process. Compare conscious process. See also preattentive processing.
