tyrosine

n. a nonessential amino acid present in most proteins. It is a precursor of the catecholamine neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, which differ structurally only at one position of the molecule. Tyrosine is derived from the essential amino acid phenylalanine.

n. a relatively small region of the upper brainstem that connects the forebrain and hindbrain. It contains the tectum (and associated inferior and superior colliculi), tegmentum, and substantia nigra. Also called mesencephalon.
