Type II cell

a type of taste cell that is electron lucent, appearing light when viewed by electron microscopy. Type II cells comprise 20% of the cells in a taste bud. They are larger than Type I cells, though their volume comes from girth rather than length. They send short, blunt microvilli through the taste pore to sample the chemical environment. Also called light cell.
