tympanic membrane

tympanic membrane

a conically shaped membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear and serves to transform the pressure waves of sounds into mechanical vibration of the ossicles. The first ossicle (malleus) is attached to the inner surface of the tympanic membrane. Also called eardrum.
