two-process model of recall

the hypothesis that retrieval of a memory can involve two stages: a search that locates material in memory followed by a decision regarding whether this is the information sought. This model was proposed to explain the occurrence of higher rates of accurate memory in the recognition method than in the recall method. Also called generate–recognize model; two-process model of retrieval.
