two-by-two factorial design

an experimental design in which there are two independent variables each having two levels. When this design is depicted as a matrix, two rows represent one of the independent variables and two columns represent the other independent variable. Also called two-by-two design; two-way factorial design. See factorial design.

an adhesive application that is designed to release a drug at a steady rate via absorption through the skin into the bloodstream. Transdermal patches are used, for example, to administer nicotine in progressively smaller doses to people who are trying to give up smoking.
