toxicity

n. the capacity of a substance to produce poisonous effects in an organism. The toxicity of a substance—whether a drug, an industrial or household chemical, or other agent—generally is related to the size of the dose per body weight of the individual, expressed in terms of milligrams of chemical per kilogram of body weight. Toxicity also may be expressed in terms of the median lethal dose (LD50). See also behavioral toxicity.
