tonic reflex

tonic reflex

1. any reflex involving a significant delay between muscle contraction and relaxation.

2. any reflex that enables a muscle or group of muscles to maintain a certain level of tension, or tonus. Signals from stretch receptors in muscles and tendons are integrated within the spinal cord, and the signals in the efferent motor neurons are adjusted accordingly. Such reflexes are crucial for maintaining posture and for movement.
