tomato effect

the rejection of an effective treatment because it does not fit an established medical model or because it does not make sense in light of currently accepted medical theories. It has been applied to biofeedback training. The tomato effect is so named because in America the tomato—known to be a member of the nightshade family—was originally thought to be poisonous; for this reason, tomatoes were not consumed in America until 1820, even though Europeans had been eating them for generations without harm.
