n. the perceptual attribute relating to the quality of a sound. Two perceptually different sounds with the same pitch and loudness differ in their timbre. Timbre is determined primarily by the sound spectrum but also is affected by temporal and intensive characteristics. Also called tone color. —timbral adj.
