thiazide diuretic

any of a group of synthetic chemicals developed in the 1950s and widely used in the treatment of hypertension. Thiazides cause the excretion of approximately equal amounts of sodium and chloride with an accompanying volume of water, thereby lowering blood pressure. Also called benzothiadiazide.

These include the secretion of prolactin, which induces broodiness and parental feeding of young in birds and milk production in mammals.
