theoretical statistics
the study of statistics from a mathematical and theoretical perspective, involving probability theory, descriptive methods, inferences, and model building. For example, a researcher could use theoretical statistics to describe a set of achievement data, conduct hypothesis testing, and create models assessing possible predictors of achievement.
