taste adaptation

a decrease in sensitivity to a stimulus that has been presented continuously to the gustatory system. The phenomenon can be complete, and the perception lost, after minutes of stimulation. Adaptation is used to determine whether two stimuli share the same receptor population by inducing adaptation to the first stimulus and then evaluating the degree to which the perception of the second stimulus is diminished.
