T-unit

n. in linguistics, short for minimal terminable unit. T-units are the shortest grammatically complete units into which a string of written or spoken language can be divided (i.e., by insertion of periods and capital letters). The mean length of T-units is often used as a measure of the structural complexity of student writing. [first described in 1965 by U.S. educationalist Kellogg W. Hunt]
