syringomyelia

n. a disorder marked by the presence of a fluid-filled cavity in the spinal cord that expands and elongates over time, causing progressive damage to the spinal cord and resulting in weakness in the arms and legs and loss of temperature and pain sensation. Syringomyelia may occur as a complication of trauma, meningitis, hemorrhage, a tumor, or congenital defects.
