n. fainting: a transient loss of consciousness resulting from sudden reduction in the blood supply to the brain. The most common type is vasovagal syncope in which the drop in blood supply is caused by heightened vagus nerve activity in response to certain triggers, such as standing up too quickly or experiencing unpleasant stimuli (e.g., the sight of blood, severe emotional distress). —syncopal adj.
