supraoptic nucleus

a particular collection of neurons in the hypothalamus that lies above the optic chiasm. Neurons in this nucleus project to the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland and secrete the hormones oxytocin and vasopressin.

n. any corticosteroid hormone that affects ion concentrations in body tissues and helps to regulate the excretion of salt and water. In humans, the principal mineralocorticoid is aldosterone.
