supervisory control

in ergonomics, the role allocated to the human operator in highly automated systems. The operator is responsible for system monitoring, interpretation, decision making, and manual correction or intervention. Reducing the operator’s role to one of supervisory control may result in either optimal or degraded performance, depending chiefly on system design. See also clumsy automation; function allocation.
