subject variable
an experience or characteristic of a research participant that is not of primary interest but nonetheless may influence study results and thus must be accounted for during experimentation or data analysis. Examples include age, marital status, religious affiliation, and intelligence. A variable of this type is neither manipulated by the experimenter, as an independent variable might be, nor is it usually changed in the course of the experiment, as a dependent variable might be. Also called background variable.
