primary group

any of the small, long-term groups characterized by face-to-face interaction and high levels of group cohesion, solidarity, and group identification. These groups are primary in the sense that they are the initial socializers of the individual members, providing them with the foundation for attitudes, values, and a social orientation. Families, partnerships, and long-term psychotherapy groups are examples of such groups. Compare secondary group.
