1. in audition, the perception of a sequence of sounds as a unitary phenomenon. Under certain conditions, several streams may be perceived nearly simultaneously, as in musical counterpoint. See fission.

2. in education, the separation of students into different categories (streams) of academic ability based on, for example, test results or prior achievements, with each stream having a unique curriculum designed for the needs and capabilities of those within it.
