stimulus differentiation

1. a process whereby an organism learns to discriminate between two or more stimuli by responding differently to them, such as by responding in the presence of one stimulus but not the other. See also discrimination learning.

2. in Gestalt psychology, the process of distinguishing different parts or patterns in a visual field.
