staircase phenomenon

1. any of various phenomena that display graduated or stepwise changes in the response of physical or physiological systems to a series of stimuli.

2. in cardiac muscle, the increase in the force of cardiac contractions as heart rate is increased.

3. in skeletal muscle, the graduated sequence of increasingly stronger muscle contractions that occur when a sequence of identical stimuli is applied to a rested muscle. Also called treppe.
