speech area

any of the areas of the cerebral cortex that are associated with language perception and production, either verbal or written. The speech production (output) areas tend to be located in the left hemisphere in Broca’s area. Speech perception and comprehension tend to be more bilateral, involving Wernicke’s area in the temporal lobe. Activation maps for speech show widely regional distribution with some overlap in the classical language regions of the cortex.
