spectroscopy

n. the study of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, especially the visible spectrum, as it interacts with matter. The interpretation of the spectra so produced is used in chemical analysis, in examining molecular structure, and for many other purposes. Spectroscopy is performed using spectroscopes, spectrometers, or spectrophotometers.
