social mobility

the extent to which a society permits or encourages change in social class, social status, or social roles. Societies differ in the degree to which they permit or facilitate movement or change in their social hierarchy (see fixed class society; open class society). Compare social immobility. See downward mobility; horizontal mobility; upward mobility; vertical mobility.
