social change

any process in which the general structure or character of a society is altered. Social change can be as varied as that occurring during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century or that occurring with the introduction of freer sexual expression in the 20th century. Social change may be the result of impersonal economic and technological forces or determined action by individuals or groups. See also culture change; social evolution; social movement.
