sleep spindles

regular sinusoidal electroencephalographic oscillations that rise and fall in amplitude in the shape of symmetrical hairpins or spindles during Stage 2 NREM sleep (see sleep stages). Spindles have a frequency of about 15 Hz and are believed to indicate a state of light sleep. They are often seen with K complexes.
