shunt

n. a congenitally occurring or surgically created passage diverting the flow of bodily fluids such as blood or cerebrospinal fluid from one part of an organ or body to another. For example, a ventriculoatrial shunt is an artificially formed passage for draining cerebrospinal fluid from the ventricles of the brain to the external jugular vein to relieve symptoms of hydrocephalus. The shunt carries the fluid through a catheter to the venous system that empties into the right atrium of the heart.
