1. a recollection, commonly of a traumatic experience, that is encoded in terms of sensations and actions rather than verbally. Frequently, it is a memory of an event that occurred during the period of childhood amnesia, which commonly lasts up to the age of 3 years. See also body memory.

in classical psychoanalytic theory, the idea that all mental processes tend toward a state of equilibrium and the stability of the inorganic state. Also called constancy law; law of constancy. See also death instinct; nirvana principle.
