segregation

1. the separation or isolation of people (e.g., ethnic groups) or other entities (e.g., mental processes) so that there is a minimum of interaction between them. 2. in genetics, the separation of the paired alleles of any particular gene during cell division (see meiosis), leading to sex-cell formation. 3. in genetics, separation of the sister chromatids of each chromosome during normal cell division (mitosis).
