Schwann cell

a type of nonneuronal peripheral nervous system cell (glia) that forms the myelin sheath around axons. Extensions of a single Schwann cell wind tightly and many times around several neighboring axons, so that the myelin sheath consists of multiple layers of the Schwann-cell plasma membrane. [Theodor Schwann (1810–1882), German physiologist]
