sacred disease
a name for epilepsy used by the ancient Greeks based on the belief that seizures were evidence of divine visitation. Hippocrates, however, rejected this view, saying “Surely it, too, has its nature and causes whence it originates, just like other diseases, and is curable by means comparable to their cure.”
