retrograde memory

the ability to recall events that occurred or information that was acquired prior to a particular point in time, often the onset of illness or physical damage such as brain injury. For example, an individual with deficits of retrograde memory (i.e., retrograde amnesia) might not remember the name of a close childhood friend but would remember the name of a person just introduced to him or her. Compare anterograde memory.
