residual analysis

a diagnostic review of the discrepancies between specific observations and the values predicted by a model (see residual). Summarizing these discrepancies in several different ways can help a researcher identify problems in the application of a model to a particular data set. For example, a residual analysis might show large discrepancies for one group but not another, suggesting that the model is not appropriate for the first group. See regression diagnostics.
