religious instinct hypothesis

the hypothesis that human beings are naturally drawn to believe in and to worship a higher power. It is used by some believers as the basis of an argument for the existence of God and the validity of religion, and by some nonbelievers as an illustration of how human beings create myths to make themselves feel more comfortable or to find meaning in life. It has also been argued that the religious instinct may have a biological origin and serve an evolutionary purpose.
