a condition that tends to maintain a healthy or maladaptive behavior or behavioral pattern in an individual. An example is when special attention is given to a person who is ill, which can contribute either to a speedy recoveryor to a delayed recovery. It is typical, however, to use the term in relation to negative or maladaptive consequences.
