redout

n. a condition resulting from blood being pushed into the head and eyes by negative g-forces. Capillaries in the eyes engorge and some may burst, causing the visual field to appear red. Redout is experienced, for example, by fighter pilots. Compare blackout.

midbrain

n. a relatively small region of the upper brainstem that connects the forebrain and hindbrain. It contains the tectum (and associated inferior and superior colliculi), tegmentum, and substantia nigra. Also called mesencephalon.
