recombinant DNA

a DNA molecule containing a fragment that has been inserted by genetic recombination or some similar process, such as by using the techniques of genetic engineering. Recombinant DNA laboratory techniques involve the creation of novel or modified pieces of genetic material, which can then be inserted in the chromosomes of another species. These techniques allow for the study of the expression of a particular gene or the development of strains of bacteria that can produce natural substances of therapeutic value.
