Rayleigh scattering

the scattering of sunlight by molecules in the atmosphere. The amount of scattering is dependent on the wavelength of the light, with short wavelengths producing stronger scattering than long wavelengths. The blue color of the sky is caused by the relatively large amount of Rayleigh scattering of short-wavelength light by the Earth’s atmosphere. [Lord Rayleigh]
