raw data

the original measurements on a variable as collected by the researcher, prior to data cleaning, recoding, transformations, and quantitative or qualitative analysis. For example, a survey may ask respondents to enter their annual income in dollars: The figures supplied by respondents would be the raw data. For the purposes of analysis, however, the data may be cleaned to account for improbable entries or individuals who prefer not to answer and recoded to create a smaller set of income categories.
