rational addiction

a controversial theory that addicts regulate their substance-focused behavior based on cost–benefit analyses. These analyses ostensibly take into account current monetary and future addiction costs and then weigh them against the benefits of the drug-induced high. [proposed by U.S. economists Kevin M. Murphy and Gary S. Becker (1930–2014)]
