rank transformation

a class of transformation in which a participant’s score on a variable is replaced by the rank position of the score relative to the other scores in the data set. For example, an instructor might modify an original distribution of exam scores for a class into a listing that is ordered from highest to lowest. Rank transformations serve as the basis for a wide variety of nonparametric tests.
