push-down stack

a model of memory that compares its storage procedures to stacks of cafeteria trays in spring-loaded compartments. New items in memory are like trays added to the top of the stack, with other items being pushed down to accommodate them. Access to memory items is only from the “top.” The model originated in computing but is now often applied to short-term memory in humans.
