psychological atomism

the view that the contents of mind consist ultimately of discrete and independent units of thought that cannot be further subdivided. These psychological atoms can be arrived at by breaking complex ideas down into simpler ones, until further division and discrimination is impossible. Some interpretations of structural psychology (see structuralism) suggest that it is based on a type of psychological atomism.
